Vojkan Kovač began his musical journey while collecting ice cores at a remote research camp in Greenland. To avoid the depression and anxiety from working in isolation, Vojkan found his escape in the world of music. Inspired by the works of composer Pierre Schaeffer and the editing techniques of Teo Macero, he explored splicing and overdubbing tape recordings to construct evocative sound collages. Curating and combining samples became a daily meditation, allowing for escapism without fear or danger.
In 2009, Vojkan moved to Chicago. After some time in America, a few close friends convinced him to perform his compositions for audiences. Up until that point, Vojkan had only thought of his music as a deeply personal project for his ears alone. While participating in the local music scene, he found himself uncomfortable with the attention, never selling merchandise and always performing under a different name.
Vojkan Kovač’s compositions evoke an unfamiliar nostalgia, taking shared memories from film and song far away from their original contexts and into strange new worlds. Some of his experiments are rhythmic, off-kilter, and dystopian, while others offer abrasive textures that eventually dissolve into a calmness. Audiences often left shows as curious and confused by his elusive work as they were moved by it.
We are proud to announce the release of Vojkan’s first mixtape, which features many of his older compositions recorded on master for the first time. These brief, abstract works showcase a wide palette of textures that stretch from the American Northeast to Midwest.
