I love the sense of space in Resavoir’s record, Themes for Dreams. One moment you’re cuddled up in the soft, warm embrace of electronic pianos, then rocked back and forth by a brazen symphony. The two call and respond to each other, and before I know it, I’m already asleep.
I always wanted to experience a lucid dream: where one has complete control over their surroundings and can move from one phantasmagorical shape or figure to another. You can conjure anything that you wish: a fish, a polar bear, a flying saucer. Feeling sci-fi? Then conjure a jacuzzi spaceship with jets for two purposes: a back massage, and propelling you and your loved ones through space to another fantastical destination.
I’m reminded of Plantasia while listening to this record, but on a grander scale. The mellow piano never takes over the mix: it dances along with the bass, the symphony, and guitar doodles. The theremin gives the record an otherworldly appeal, but the brass and orchestra keep one foot on planet Earth. That’s how we dream, though, isn’t it? Our thoughts and feelings are otherworldly, yet grounded in experiences we had as children.
There are no lyrics to the record, but over time, I realized the album’s central message: feel free to dream; sit back, and relax—you are safe here.
